Boston and District Mini Tennis Red Tournament
On Thursday 23rd of April, we took four very keen tennis players to compete in a Boston schools’ tournament held at Boston Tennis Club. Sixteen schools entered in total which were then separated into four different groups,
Group 1- St Thomas, Wrangle, Fishtoft and New Leake Group 2- Wyberton, Hawthorn Tree, New York and Gosberton
Group 3- Frithville, Swineshead, Sibsey and Gipsey Bridge Group 4- Tower Road, Staniland, Old Leake and St Nicholas The winners from each group would then go through to a semi- final.
Tower Road first played Staniland. Each player won all their matches, so we won 4-0.
The second game was against Old leake, which all players won again, 4-0. The third and final game of the group was against St Nicholas, which we also won 3-1.
This then meant that Tower Road won their group and so went through to the semi- finals.
In the semi-finals, Tower Road faced a difficult match against Sibsey, as 2 of their players play at county levels, while Tower Road only had one. The score ended up in Sibsey’s favour, 3-1 on games, however some of the Tower Road players lost by very respectable and narrow scores! Tower Road then went to play a 3rd and 4th place play off against St Thomas, which finished off as a 2-2 draw, meaning that both teams finished in joint 3rd place. While Sibsey faced Hawthorn Tree in the final, with Sibsey winning the tournament and will go on to represent Boston area at County in July.
The children all performed excellently and gradually improved as the afternoon went on.
We would like to say a huge thank you to Matt Haslam for organising the event, and also to the Thomas Middlecott students for helping run and umpire the tennis matches. Many thanks to Isobel’s mum for supporting the team!
