Spalding Schools’ Hockey Tournament Finals
Friday May 15th saw the last tournament of the season and the presentation of the plates.
This was the second time we had entered the event and having come first in the Intermediate Division last time, we were moved up to the First Division! Where we were facing a challenge of playing against teams with greater competition experience than us.
Our first game against St Norbert’s ‘A’ saw a 2-0 defeat. After the first goal was scored in the first few seconds of the game; the team very quickly organised themselves and fought back and held their own, having several attempts at goal! Despite the hard work a second goal slipped in.
The second game saw us face John Harrox ‘A’. This team have been undefeated this season, scoring 77 goals and only conceding 6 goals. We were facing a challenge! Again the team worked very well together, holding their own against a much more experienced team. Horrax scored but we went back in to the attack. All the time we were learning new rules that we didn’t know, and it was one of these rules that caused our only goal to be disallowed. But we learnt from this! This series of hockey tournaments is designed to fill the gap between Quick Stick hockey and secondary school hockey and so the rules have been adapted to reflect this.
Our third game against Pinchbeck East ‘A’ saw us in a much stronger attacking role. For most of the game we were attacking the opposition’s goal, but the ball just wouldn’t go in. However a lucky breakaway, by Pinchbeck East, saw them score the winning goal. This caused the team to feel despondent, having now lost three games. After a team talk, we went back into our last game with lighter spirits as we faced St Mary’s. St Mary’s had also lost all their games so this was to be a grand decider! The game was very equal on both sides, with friendly banter all round. Attacks were made at each other’s goals, with no luck; so it was very good to see 0-0 end score, neither teams deserved to loose!
At the end of the tournament the presentations were made. Division 4- saw St Mary’s ‘B’ team come in =4th place with John Horrax ’B’ team. Monks House came 1st, with Gosberton ‘B’ in 2nd and Wyberton ‘A’ in 3rd place. In Division 3- saw Weston Hills in 1st place. In Division 2- St John’s came 1st with Gosberton ‘A’ in 2nd place and Wyberton ‘A’ in 3rd place. Finally, in Division 1- St Norbert’s ’A’ came 1st with John Harrox in 2nd place (last year’s winners) Pinchbeck East 3rd and St Mary’s and us in =4th place.
Despite losing 3 three games and drawing one, the team had learnt lots and their playing was brilliantly and other team coaches praised our team on their game playing and for holding their own against more experienced teams! Well done to the team!
Thank you to the parents who came and supported the team.
