County Finals: Large Schools’ Indoor Sportshall Athletics 2015
On Friday 6th March we travelled back to Grantham Meres Leisure Centre, to represent the Boston area, in the County Finals of the large schools’ indoor sportshall athletics. Stickney Primary had represented Boston area in the morning’s round of the small schools final. Then after our afternoon competition the secondary schools would be assembling for their County finals.
We arrived with had a team of 23 athletes. 12 girls and 11 boys. 12 Year 6s and 11 year 5s. Very eager and raring to go! This was the culmination of the year’s training, and tension and expectation was very high. There were seven teams taking part with Caistor Primary unable to come.
After a noisy and electric warm up all the teams settled into their bases and the afternoon’s races began.
The events started with the obstacle races. Girls first then boys. Which we came 4th in both. Not a bad start! After that the boys went off to take part in the first round of field events while the girls took part in the track events. This formed the format for the afternoon. So while we knew where the teams finished in the track races we were left in the dark as to how we were doing in the field events! With the races we had a 1st in the girls Over/under Relay- a brilliant win! In the rest of the races we had a mixture of finishing positions- two 6th, two 5th, five 4th, two 3rd. (Not officially confirmed yet!) The tension was building and building. The support for all competitors was wonderful. Loads and loads of cheering and clapping!
Amongst the main races there were also the occasional non-scoring race which meant others had the opportunity to compete.
The afternoon culminated with the javelin and speed bounce competitions. The girls’ team threw well but the boys surprised themselves with some super throws. Louis threw his PB and Sisa could well have done too! The speed bouncers were bouncing their fastest at the same time.
After this there was a team coaches’ javelin event which Mr Johnson, gallantly, offered to take part in! He too threw his PB. 24 metres!! The best result of all the coaches- unfortunately there were no extra points for this.
The very last races of the day were the 4X1 lap relays. With a non-scoring race afterwards while the scores were being totalled.
The end had come and now for the scores. Tension was even higher!
The scores were read in reverse order, breathes were held as the list was read out… 7th Parish Church, Gainsborough (172 points), 6th St Andrew’s, Woodhall Spa (178 points), 5th All Saints, Waddington (200 points), 4th Bourne Westfield (258 points), 3rdTower Road Academy (260 points),
2nd St. Botolph’s, Sleaford (276 points) and in 1st place, the winners of last year too, were Cliffedale, Grantham (358 points).
A fantastic afternoon and a fantastic result from our point of view as we improved on our 4th place finish of last year.
Thank you to Skegness Academy for their judging and training along the way.
Many thanks to all the supporters (parents and grandparents) who travelled to Grantham to cheer us along. It is always so good to see you all!
